Multiplying Pass Concepts with the Shallow Series
Share

Last week, we discussed multiplying pass concepts using the Bow series. This week, we’re going to focus on a few Shallow Cross variations. I specifically chose the word “multiply” because that’s what I truly feel these concepts do. “Adding” would be running a back-side concept that only applies to one passing concept. The Bow and Shallow series’ are multiplicative because they apply to all passing concepts without changing the read for the QB.

The first variation to break down is the namesake, Shallow. In most general use terms, the concept is normally called Drive. I prefer the Shallow tag because it fits in the rest of the nomenclature while also being a much better verbal cue for the QB that his flat control route is going to be the Shallow.

My core 4 passes are Sail (Flood), Hog (Hi Cross), Arrow (Corner/Snag), and Stick. I like to build them starting in 2x1, bringing the flat control route from the backfield. The next phase is splitting them into 2x2 or 3x1 concepts. For example, the base way to run Sail from one back would be 3x1, keeping the flat route play-side. Hog, on the other hand, would be 2x2 so I could have my base flat route play-side.

What Shallow allows me to do is switch that up. I can bring my flat control route from the other side of the field. Now I can run Sail from 2x2 and Hog from 3x1 because we’re getting to the same spots.

An important note about Shallow is that it can only be used on drop back concepts. My quick game concepts are designed to horizontally stretch a curl defender, but the Shallow Cross takes too long to create that stretch on time. The premium side of the article will contain three more variations of the Shallow series: one that is quick game & drop back friendly, one that can give man and match coverage extra issues while maintaining 6 man protection, and another that combines this week’s Shallow and last week’s Bow.

Next week, we will wrap up this series on multiplying pass concepts by looking at two ways to create Quads passing concepts while still running our base concepts. Thanks for reading!
